Uxbridge Library steeple caught fire after being hit by lightning

Uxbridge Public Library has now reopened to the public and resumed regular operations following a fire, according to the township’s mayor.

Uxbridge Mayor Dave Barton, said on July 21st around 4:09 pm, the Uxbridge Library tower was struck by lightning.

Staff and campers were safely evacuated without incident to Town Hall, according to the emergency response plans. No injuries were reported.

Barton thanked the library staff and said: “They did an outstanding job moving everyone safely out of the building. The library campers were brought over to council chambers, where they kept busy doing crafts until their parents arrived.”

Repairs

Connectivity services have been restored, and all library services are now operating as usual.

Repairs to the clock tower are being coordinated, with work expected to take place over the coming weeks.

Mayor Barton ended his statement saying: “Days like today are a great reminder of how fortunate we are to have such dedicated staff, emergency responders and caring community members.”

Uxbridge thanks the public for their patience and understanding during this temporary closure.
