In response to a fire that has left several families without homes, local residents are also turning to crowdfunding to help rebuild their lives. Multiple GoFundMe campaigns have been launched to support those affected by the incident.
This is in addition to the supports being provided by Durham Region as well as monetary donations being collected by the Salvation Army.
Clarington municipality said some 35 persons have been displaced due to the March 6 fire in downtown Bowmanville.
Local residents and supporters are using online fundraising to replace lost possessions, secure new housing, and assist with immediate living needs. Several crowdfunding campaigns have emerged, each highlighting the personal stories of those impacted by the fire.
Help the Johnston family rebuild after a tragic fire “Dan who has known me all my life and taken care of me lost his house in a tragic fire last night, I would like to help him because he has been loving to me my whole life and he has a whole family to take care of and unfortunately this fire took everything he had”.
Apartment Fire Relief “Our daughter, son-in-law and grandson were awakened in the night to a fire in their apartment building. Thankfully everyone is safe but they have likely lost everything. I’m starting this GoFundMe to raise money to help them replace the things they need that were lost and to help them get into a new place.”
Fire Devastation cleans out several families “Among the many families with losses is my niece, who recently lost her husband, now also has lost his ashes in the fire. Along with other members of the family, including my nephew, fiancée, two kids, and two great nephews and their families, they’ve lost everything but the clothes they wore that night. They are starting over from scratch on fixed incomes”.
