Rotary club redirects fundraiser proceeds to fire victims

In what was to have been a fundraiser for the club itself, the Bowmanville Rotary Club has announced that all proceeds raised from its St. Patrick’s Day “Shamrockin” event will instead be dedicated to helping victims of the fire that devastated a portion of downtown Bowmanville last Thursday morning.

More than 30 residents were displaced by the blaze, several businesses were damaged, and Durham Regional Police have confirmed that a body has been found at the scene.

“Rotarians are people of action,” says the event chair, Rachel Boyd. “and when our community needs help, we step up.”

The dinner and dance features traditional Irish food like beer braised bangers, Beef & Guinness stew, leeks & tatties, Irish greens and soda bread, and along with Irish coffee and of course, Guinness beer.

Entertainment includes a performance by the O’Donnell School of Traditional Irish Dance and back by popular demand after playing Rotary’s Oktoberfest, Madhaus – a party band, playing everything from Ozzy to Madonna and everything in between.

Tickets are $70, a price that includes dinner. “People can enjoy great entertainment while helping those in need by supporting the event,” says Boyd.
