The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM) will begin precise excavation to remove portions of some fire-hit Bowmanville buildings, which may include front facades, according to an update from the municipality.
It said the removals are needed to allow better access for investigation.
Investigation is continuing into their fire, and is anticipated to continue through this week. King Street West continues to be closed to vehicular traffic.
Once the investigation has concluded, decisions will be made about the structural integrity of surrounding buildings and orders will be issued to property owners to outline next steps, said officials.
In a social media post, Talk of the Town, a restaurant affected by the fires, stated that it ‘received information that the building will likely be completely demolished.’

Region of Durham said they continue to support displaced residents with temporary accommodations, counselling, social work support, and the distribution of gift cards thanks to donations from the community through the Salvation Army Bowmanville.
Road closure and detours
King Street West, west of Temperance Street to Silver Street, is open to local traffic only. King Street West remains fully closed to vehicular traffic between Silver Street and Scugog Street. The north sidewalk is open and parking is free in downtown Bowmanville to support local businesses, said officials.
