Remediation works are ongoing on the scars on the north side of the embankment created south of Energy Drive as part of the Small Modular Reactor program at the Darlington nuclear site.
Two smaller cracks are visible. However, earth moving machinery is currently being used on the huge section of soil erosion west of the smaller cracks.
“The soil movement work is being conducted under a thoroughly reviewed and accepted environmental assessment with regulatory oversight in place,” said a statement from Ontario Power Generation (OPG).
“OPG has implemented a range of measures intended to effectively manage drainage, erosion, and sediment conditions within the project area. These efforts are informed by regular ongoing assessments and review of drainage features, adjustments to water management controls, enhancement of erosion and sediment protection measures, and continued monitoring of site conditions,” OPG added.
The major soil erosion was brought to the notice of both OPG and Clarington officials by Bowmanville resident and retired engineer, Jim McEwen.
“We appreciate you sharing your observations and for taking the time to reach out. We value feedback from members of the community. Please be assured that OPG and the relevant regulatory agencies will continue to monitor site conditions closely and implement appropriate measures to support environmental protection throughout this work,” OPG added.

You mean to say that neither OPG nor the Municipality noticed that the erosion has been happening for months now……give me a break!!
