First significant snow squalls of the season expected

First significant snow squalls of the season are expected late overnight through Tuesday, according to an alert issued by Environment Canada yesterday.

North Durham is likely to be impacted, according to the Township of Scugog, which alerted residents of  a snow squall watch for Scugog. “With heavy snowfall, visibility can be reduced and travelling conditions poor. Please be mindful of your surroundings when travelling, both in vehicles and on foot.”

Environment Canada said the snowfall is projected to begin late overnight (monday) or Tuesday morning, and continue until Tuesday evening. “The first significant lake effect snow squalls of the season are forecast to move into the area late overnight or Tuesday morning. These snow squalls will continue through Tuesday before weakening Tuesday night.”

It said strong westerly winds followed by northwesterly winds will accompany these snow squalls resulting in significantly reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Hazards include:

  • Locally heavy snowfall with total accumulations of 10 to 25 cm.
  • Intense snowfall rates of up to 5 cm per hour at times.
  • Reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve, said Environment Canada.
