Flag raised on Transgender Day of Remembrance

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) raised the flag for the Transgender Day of Remembrance at its regional headquarters on Rossland Road in Whitby yesterday.

Supt. Teresa Hutchinson, Regional Chair John Henry & PFLAG Durham rep Theo Dowling, were present.

“We pledge to continue to advocate and educate for our vision of a world more inclusive, loving and supportive,” said Supt Hutchinson.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil has expanded to include all trans people who have died because of violence and it is now recognized globally.
