Flags at half mast to honour police trainee Tyrone Magbitang

Flags at all regional facilities have been lowered to half-mast to honour the life and service of the Constable-in-Training who passed away on July 7.

The 27-year old Constable in Training, Tyrone Magbitang, was involved in a motor vehicle collision while travelling to the Ontario Police College in Malahide Township, east of Aylmer, in Elgin County in southwestern Ontario.

On July 8th, CIT Magbitang was transported from London, Ontario, to the Centre for Forensic Sciences (CFS) in Toronto. Loved ones and members of the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) accompanied him as a mark of respect and in recognition of his service and commitment to the profession he aspired to join.

CIT Magbitang joined the DRPS as a Special Constable in May 2023. In April of this year, he took the next step toward achieving his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer when he was selected as a police constable recruit, said a police statement.

Compassionate, Dedicated And Service-driven

Tyrone was described as a compassionate, dedicated, and service-driven individual who believed deeply in helping others and making a positive difference in the community. Following his Police Foundations education, he pursued a career in public safety with determination, humility, and an unwavering commitment to serving those around him.

“Although his time with our service was far too short, Tyrone made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. He will be remembered for his kindness, professionalism, and the tremendous potential he brought to our organization. His loss is deeply felt throughout the DRPS and the wider policing community,” the statement said.

Region Saddened

John Henry, Regional Chair, said: “I am deeply saddened by the tragic collision that took place yesterday (July 7) involving two Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Constables-in-Training who were travelling to the Ontario Police College in Elgin County.”

On behalf of the entire Region of Durham, he extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, classmates and colleagues of the constable who tragically lost their life.

“Although their policing career was just beginning, they had chosen a path of service and commitment to others—a decision that deserves our respect and gratitude.” added Henry.

Wishes For Full Recovery For Other CIT Injured

He mentioned that his thoughts are also with the second Constable-in-Training who sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital. He wished them strength in their recovery and extended support to their family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Henry concluded saying: “Every day, members of DRPS serve our communities with courage, professionalism and compassion, and we are deeply grateful for their dedication to keeping our residents safe. We join Chief Moreira, all members of the Durham Regional Police Service and the broader policing community in mourning this devastating loss.”
