Food & Toy Drive sets new record

The Durham Regional Police Service’s (DRPS) said its 32nd annual Food and Toy Drive was a tremendous success despite the challenges of Covid-19.

“There were many questions and concerns as to how we would operate and manage, while also ensuring the safety of our members, community , volunteers and those whom we were assisting,” says Cst. Darryl Rice, Food and Toy Drive Coordinator.

With the assistance of the DRPS Emergency Operations Centre, who worked diligently to ensure the safety of all involved, the drive was able to go ahead.

“Every agency, charity, foodbank, mission, individual and family that needed our help, received more than what they ever could have expected. Gymnasiums, rooms, basements and cupboards were bursting with donations and even after every request and order has been filled, they will still have enough to keep them going into the New Year. Those who had it to give this year, gave more, and those who weren’t sure if they had it to give at all, gave because someone needed it more. The region of Durham truly cares about its communities and those in need, from our children to our seniors.”

Cst Rice adds, “What was so humbling this year more than ever, and especially during a year when we (the police) needed it most, was that the public stepped forward to extend their overwhelming support to the DRPS and the people we serve and protect within this amazing Region of Durham.”

DRPS acknowledged the efforts of Cst. Darryl Rice, who, for the last five years has selflessly sacrificed time with his family and volunteered to ensure the success of the Food and Toy Drive. His efforts have made a difference to thousands of families across Durham Region. This year his work to ensure Covid-19 did not interfere with helping those is in need has been extraordinary.

DRPS also thanked everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s Food and Toy Drive. It has been a difficult and uncertain year for everyone and it’s inspiring to see everyone come together and make a difference for those who need it most.
