Hillsdale Terraces covid outbreak declared over

Durham Region Health Department yesterday declared the Covid-19 outbreak over at Hillsdale Terraces long-term care facility in Oshawa.

“Hillsdale Terraces was one of the first homes in Ontario to declare a Covid-19 outbreak, on March 19. This outbreak unfortunately resulted in the death of 14 residents. Another 28 residents tested positive and have subsequently recovered. In addition, 13 employees tested positive with eight staff fully recovered and five more at home recovering,” said Dr. Robert Kyle, Medical Officer of Health for the Regional Municipality of Durham.

He thanked Hillsdale Terraces management and staff, who followed infection prevention and control guidelines and adhered to directives from the Durham Region Health Department and Ontario Ministry of Health to resolve this outbreak.

“This has been a difficult time for families who have loved ones in long-term care homes. We grieve the 14 lives lost at Hillsdale Terraces as a result of this outbreak. Residents in long-term care homes and retirement homes are some of the most vulnerable members of our community, and every one of us has a responsibility to do everything we can to ensure that all members of our community are protected,” said Dr. Kyle.

“Despite the outbreak being over at Hillsdale Terraces, we need to remember that Covid-19 continues to affect our community. I remind the community to stay vigilant and informed as we continue to work together to keep our community safe,” he added.
