The last service at the historic Clarington church at Maple Grove will be held on Sunday, June 22, at 1:30pm.
Maple Grove United Church will be closing its sanctuary after almost 153 years. The property has been sold.
The Service of Closure will be led by Rev. David O. Jones. The choir will be directed by Tracey Marek.
Maple Grove United Church has been in service since 1872, and in September 2022, the church had celebrated 150 years as the fulcrum of the surrounding community.
Recalling the history during the 150th anniversary service, Rev. Jones said the the church formally records its history from Sunday, December 29, 1872, when worship was held at 11 am, 3 pm and 5:30 pm.
The church was later described as ‘literally filled’ for each service. The next day a tea was hosted at the public school across the road, where 250 persons were recorded as being welcomed. It was followed by a public meeting in the new church. The main speaker at opening service was Bishop James Richardson of the then Methodist Episcopal Church.
