According to a public notice from the Regional Municipality of Durham, the annual road line painting season is now underway, with operations scheduled to continue until November.
Line painting will occur primarily on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm, though some weekend and nighttime work may also be scheduled. Operations are taking place on all regional roads—more than 3,700 lane kilometres in total—as well as on select local municipal roads and Ministry of Transportation on/off-ramp intersections.
Durham Region advises drivers to stay back from follow-up trucks and avoid crossing freshly painted lines, which contain glass beads to improve reflectivity. Driving over wet paint may not only damage vehicles but can also affect the visibility and durability of road markings.
The region notes that line painting is a mobile operation. Follow-up trucks travel behind painting vehicles to protect the freshly applied lines and allow time for drying. Residents are encouraged to consider alternate routes when possible to avoid active painting zones.
The region also states that line markings are a key road safety feature, helping to define lanes and guide all road users, including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
To track painting operations in real-time, Durham Region encourages the use of live traffic and navigation apps. More information is available at durham.ca/LinePainting.
