Ice jams and extreme cold warning in effect

Durham Region Health Department yesterday issued an Extreme Cold Weather Alert for North Durham effective today (Wednesday February 23) until Thursday morning (February 24).

Meanwhile, the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca) is extending the existing Water Safety Statement, saying another significant weather system is expected to move through Southern Ontario today bringing above freezing temperatures and rainfall.

The Cloca watershed could see 15-20mm of mixed precipitation on Tuesday, with temperatures in the low double digits possible. The system is expected to move out Wednesday with temperatures dropping back down to below freezing, it said.

After last week’s event, water levels are at or near seasonal normal levels. However, forecast precipitation combined with warmer air temperatures, and frozen ground may cause increased runoff and it is anticipated that water levels will increase. This rise in levels could cause movement of the remaining ice, and ice jams could occur. No flooding is anticipated but will be monitored.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents and children to stay away from all watercourses, shorelines and structures such as bridges, culverts dams, and break walls. Elevated water levels, fast-flowing water, slippery conditions, freezing spray, and waves along stream banks and shorelines continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses and keep a safe distance from shorelines.

This Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Thursday, February 24, or until further notice.
