Scugog lifts state of emergency at midnight

The Township of Scugog yesterday announced that as of 11:59pm last night, the State of Emergency will be lifted as conditions become more favourable.

“While the roads are better, please be reminded that some areas still contain snow and ice so be sure to drive carefully and be ready to adjust to conditions,” said a township announcement.

The Township thanked residents for their continued patience during this declared State of Emergency.

It said the township experienced extraordinary winter weather in the past several days compounding operations work that had been ongoing over the last few weeks. The unexpected winds, blowing snow and whiteout conditions over the weekend stretched the capacity of operations staff in maintaining the roads within the township. The state of emergency was issued to allow staff to work extended hours to ensure the roads remained safe for residents and emergency vehicles.

Work continues as crews push snow banks and drifts back along over 300 kilometers of rural roads to help with potential flooding. Our phones are busy fielding many calls regarding ditching and culverts and we thank residents and appreciate their patience. Staff are assessing all the catch basins and culverts for maintenance and will prioritize in anticipation of expected rain.

Despite the rain, operations staff will be available to address the expected weather for the coming week, including more snow this coming weekend, said the announcement.

Durham Team

We would like to thank our community partners the Durham Region, their operations team, Durham Regional Police and EMS, Ontario Provincial Police, City of Oshawa and Scugog Fire that assisted or was on the ready to assist stranded motorists, support for operations, evaluate roads conditions and action closures where needed.

“A big thank you to all of our neighbouring community partners who stepped up to give us support,” said Mayor Bobbie Drew. “As well a heartfelt thank you and appreciation to our Scugog Public Work Operators and staff that continued the work to keep the plows on the road, keeping roads open for essential travel and emergency services.”

The township said weather can change quickly and operations will continue to work to prepare our roads ahead of winter weather. Remember to prepare as well. With mild temperatures, frozen grounds and water, our runoff areas and watercourses will be dangerous. Please keep small children and pets away from watercourses and storm water management ponds. To report an issue on the roads, please visit scugog.ca/report_it. Your patience is appreciated as we work to serve our residents.

“Thank you to the public for pulling together to help neighbours in need. We saw many images online of residents helping those stuck in ditches or along rural roads. We also thank the many positive and supportive messages and comments we received over the last few days,” Mayor Bobbie Drew.
