Man passing out fake $100 bills arrested and charged

DRPS have charged a 33-year-old man in connection with an investigation into counterfeit currency used at multiple stores in the region.

According to the Financial Crimes Unit, between January 8 and March 14, the suspect allegedly used counterfeit $100 bills to purchase items from various electronic and clothing stores in Durham Region. Some store employees identified the counterfeit bills, and sales were declined.

Investigators linked the suspect to other similar incidents before making an arrest on Thursday, March 27. Police reported that officers seized more than $3,000 in counterfeit currency from the accused.

Authorities are continuing to investigate additional incidents involving similar counterfeit bills in Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area.

A 33-year-old male from Toronto was charged. Police did not say whether the suspect was held for bail or released for an undertaking. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
