Speedster flees police, claims he was passenger when caught

A stunt driver has been charged after trying to flee from a Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officer in Oshawa.

On Tuesday March 25 at about 6:25 am, a member of traffic services was on proactive patrol in the area of Tennyson Avenue and Harmony Road South in Oshawa when they observed a suspicious vehicle enter Highway 401. After the vehicle was registered driving 150kmh, the officer initiated a traffic stop.

The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, the officer disengaged and exited the 401 – alerting officers in the area to be on the lookout for the vehicle. A short time later, the vehicle was located in a nearby parking lot, police said.

As the officer approached the vehicle the driver was observed jumping from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat. The driver attempted to claim he was not driving, but through further investigation it was determined that he had been.

A 30-year-old male from Oshawa is charged with: Flight From Police Officer; Stunt Driving; Driving Under Suspension x2, and Owner Operate Motor Vehicle Without Insurance. He was released on an undertaking, received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment, police said.
