Man tried to scissor off handbag from senior shopper

Durham police yesterday said a male is facing charges after using scissors to rob a 79-year-old female in Clarington.

On Monday, July 13 at about 3 pm, members of East Division responded to a robbery call at the Canadian Tire located at 2000 Green Street in Bowmanville.

A female was approached outside of the business by a male armed with a pair of scissors, who attempted to cut her handbag straps and flee. The victim attempted to stop the suspect from fleeing; however, the suspect made threats with the scissors.

Public Restrained Suspect

The suspect then stole the victim’s car keys and attempted to flee in her vehicle but was stopped and restrained by members of the public. Officers arrived on scene a short time later and took the suspect into custody.

The victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

The suspect, age 27 from Clarington was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
