Masked men with bat and bear spray attempt home invasion

Durham police are asking for the public’s help after an attempted home invasion in Ajax on Thursday morning.

According to investigators, officers from West Division were called at about 9:05 am on August 7, following a report of suspicious activity near Church Street North and Kingston Road West. A caller told police that two men, both wearing medical masks, were sitting in a dark-coloured vehicle in front of a home on Darley Street.

Before officers arrived, police say the men got out of the vehicle with one carrying a baseball bat and the other armed with bear spray, and ran toward a homeowner who was standing outside. The homeowner quickly went inside and called police. One suspect then kicked the inside entrance door before both fled the scene.

Officers searched the area but were unable to find the suspects. Police believe the incident was isolated.

Investigators are asking anyone with information, or with video footage from the Kearney Drive and Darley Street area between 7 am and 10 am on Thursday to contact Detective Obront of the West Crime Team at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5858.
