‘Multiple males’ with tools attempt to break into bank ATM

Two males are in custody after breaking into a bank and fleeing police in Ajax.

On Sunday, March 3 at about 11:20 pm, members of West Division responded to a break-and-enter call at the Scotiabank located at 15 Westney Road North, in Ajax.

Bank security contacted police when they observed multiple males with various tools attempting to break into the ATM. Officers arrived at the bank and located a suspicious vehicle. Police attempted to block the vehicle but it fled the area and a short pursuit was initiated, said a police statement.

In an attempt to flee, the suspect vehicle drove through two backyards and collided with a nearby residence. The driver was taken into custody without incident.

No persons inside the residence were physically injured. The driver was transported to a local area hospital with minor injuries. The residence is still being assessed for structural integrity as the damage from the collision was significant, police said.

One male suspect, age 28, and another, age 39 were charged and were held for a bail hearing. Names and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Both males recently arrived in Canada from Chile, police said.

It said anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. Mackinnon of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 3617.
