Driver arrested with four times the legal limit of alcohol

A male has been arrested after operating a vehicle with four times the legal limit of alcohol in his system, in Ajax.

He was found by officers unconscious and slumped over in the driver’s seat, while the vehicle was stopped with its engine running on the roadway.

On Saturday, February 24, at about 10:50 pm, a member of West division on proactive patrol in Ajax, observed a vehicle stopped on the roadway with its engine still running. The officer saw that the vehicle had been damaged and had multiple flat tires.

When the officer approached the vehicle, they observed the driver slumped over. Officers checked the driver, who was breathing but unconscious. They found numerous signs indicating impairment. After multiple attempts, police were able to wake the driver up.

The driver repeatedly told police that he had not been driving the vehicle after they removed him from the driver’s seat. He was taken into custody without incident.

A 39 year old male from Pickering is charged. The male completed three alcohol breath tests with results of 330mg, 300mg and 350mg of alcohol 100ml of blood. The legal driving limit for alcohol consumption is 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.

This driver was four times over the legal limit.

His license has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days, police said.

DRPS Traffic Services said: “This behaviour is absolutely unacceptable – alcohol and driving do NOT mix. We are proud of our frontline officers that are always on patrol 24/7. This incident highlights the value of proactive patrol within our communities.”
