Durham residents are being reminded that they are still responsible for submitting any time sensitive payments and applications on time during the Canada Post workers’ strike.
Items received late are subject to penalty or interest, said an alert from the City of Oshawa.
The Municipality of Clarington announced that all incoming and outgoing mail will be affected by the labour disruption. The municipality is not able to send large distribution mailings or receive incoming mail. This includes:
- Property Tax
- Public Meeting Notices
- Clarington Connected print newsletter
- Regional Services
- Water and sewer bills
Both municipalities are urging residents to stay informed and utilize alternative methods of communication to minimize disruptions.
In a labor dispute with Canada Post, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has begun a national strike effective Friday, November 15 at 12:01 am.
“This decision will have a significant and immediate impact on millions of Canadians, small businesses and charities who count on Canada Post during the busy holiday season,” said a Canada Post statement.
It pointed out that Canada Post is losing $3 billion since 2018. “We’ve offered competitive wage increases (11.5 per cent over four years) and additional paid leave, while protecting [workers’] defined benefit pension and job security provisions.
Canada Post has put forward proposals to offer seven-day-a-week parcel delivery, more competitive pricing and other improvements.
