New temporary bridge on Beaver River opens to traffic

After nearly a year of closure, a temporary replacement bridge on Beaver River has been opened to traffic in Beaverton, in the Township of Brock.

The original bridge, closed in November 2023 due to the need for replacement, presented a significant challenge for the community. However, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Regional Municipality of Durham, the Township of Brock, and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, a temporary modular bridge system has been installed.

“This temporary bridge is a lifeline for our community,” said Walter Schummer, Mayor of the Township of Brock. “It reconnects us and brings visitors back to our downtown businesses.”

The temporary bridge will serve as a vital link until the permanent structure is completed – a project anticipated for 2027. The temporary structure can handle full traffic loads, ensuring a smooth flow of vehicles, including those accessing Beaverton’s downtown area and emergency services, said a region statement.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the local community for their patience and understanding during the closure,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO. “We also appreciate the support from the Township of Brock and the Province of Ontario, whose investment has been instrumental in moving this project forward.”

The Ministry of Transportation is contributing up to $16.6 million to cover the costs associated with both the temporary and permanent bridge replacements. Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, emphasized the importance of this investment: “This critical infrastructure will not only support local businesses but also make it easier for emergency services to reach those in need.”

Construction Considerations for Drivers

Drivers are advised that lane shifts will be necessary until the permanent bridge is completed. A reduced speed limit of 40 kmh will be in effect through the bridge site and east of the Highway 12 intersection.
