Oshawa approves Age-Friendly strategy for city

The City of Oshawa and the Oshawa Senior Community Centres (OSCC55+) have endorsed Oshawa’s Age-Friendly Strategy.

The strategy outlines a framework for the City and the OSCC55+ to respond to both opportunities and challenges of an aging population. It will do so by creating physical and social environments that support independent, active living and enable older adults to continue contributing to all aspects of community life.

The strategy contains recommended actions centred on the eight World Health Organization age-friendly dimensions:

1. Outdoor spaces and buildings
2. Transportation
3. Housing
4. Social participation
5. Respect and social inclusion
6. Civic participation and employment
7. Communication and information
8. Community support and health services.

The Oshawa Age-friendly Strategy was developed over a three-month period through community consultation and stakeholder partnerships.

Following is a list of some partners who provided input to the strategy:

• Alzheimer Society of Durham Region
• Carea Community Health Centre
• Community Care Durham
• Community Development Council of Durham
• Downtown Oshawa Business Improvement Area
• Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation
• Ontario Tech University
• OSCC55+ Board and Membership Council representatives
• Oshawa Public Libraries
• Region of Durham

Oshawa looks forward to joining the WHO Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities which will enable the exchange of experience and mutual learning between cities and communities worldwide.

“The City of Oshawa prides itself in regards to its Senior Community Centres serving over 55,000 individuals who are 55+. Having the opportunity to work with the age-friendly communities initiative will only enhance the services that are available in the city,” said Mayor Dan Carter.
