With the Victoria Day long weekend approaching, Oshawa Fire Services is reminding residents to prioritize fire safety and respect for neighbours when using fireworks.
According to the City of Oshawa’s Fireworks By-law, residents may discharge Consumer (Family) Fireworks on their own property without a permit between dusk and 11 pm on Victoria Day, this May 19.
Using fireworks outside of these designated times may result in fines of up to $100,000. Residents are encouraged to review the Fireworks By-law for full details on prohibited activities.
Fireworks Safety Tips
Oshawa Fire Services recommends several safety practices for handling fireworks:
- Designate a responsible adult to handle and discharge fireworks.
- Follow all directions on fireworks packaging.
- Keep a water hose or bucket of water nearby.
- Set off fireworks away from buildings, trees, and dry grass.
- Ensure onlookers stay at a safe distance, preferably upwind.
- Light only one firework at a time on the ground—never in your hand.
- Do not attempt to relight dud fireworks. Instead, soak them in water after 30 minutes and dispose of them in a metal container.
- Avoid setting off fireworks in windy conditions.
- Keep sparklers away from children as they burn extremely hot and can cause serious injury. Soak used sparklers in water immediately after use.
- In case of burns, run cool water over the affected area for 3 to 5 minutes and seek medical attention if needed.
Be a Considerate Neighbour
The city emphasizes courtesy and awareness when using fireworks in residential areas:
- Inform your neighbours about your plans in advance.
- Keep in mind that fireworks may distress pets.
- Respect the permitted time frame.
- Safely clean up all debris after your display.
