Oshawa Animal Services is teaming up with PetSmart Charities of Canada to celebrate National Adoption Week from July 21 to 27, aiming to match adoptable pets with loving families across the region.
According to the City of Oshawa, local shelters are currently experiencing a surge in kitten and cat intakes, a seasonal increase commonly referred to as “kitten season.” In response, Oshawa Animal Services will be showcasing adoptable cats, kittens, and small animals at several PetSmart locations in Durham Region:
- PetSmart Oshawa North – 891 Taunton Rd. E.
- PetSmart Ritson – 222 Ritson Rd. N., Unit 1
- PetSmart North Whitby – 1B-320 Taunton Rd. E.
Staff and volunteers will be on-site to help potential adopters find their perfect match. Every successful adoption creates space in shelters for other animals in need, supporting the broader effort to save lives.
In addition to providing companionship, pet adoption can offer a range of personal benefits including improved mental and physical health, reduced feelings of isolation, and encouragement for a more active lifestyle. For families, caring for a pet also presents valuable opportunities to teach children about responsibility and empathy.
One recent rescue, a kitten named Lucky, underscores the life-changing impact of adoption. Lucky was found in a water-filled dumpster and brought to the PetSmart Oshawa North location by a passerby. After being treated for hypothermia, Lucky is now safe, recovering, and will soon be ready for adoption.
