Oshawa sets six building records in 2019

The City of Oshawa yesterday announced that it has set six building records in 2019.

These are:

  1. Highest July Industrial of $71,300,000 (surpassing 2006’s record by $51.3 million)
  2. Highest August Residential of $72,520,900 (surpassing 2013’s record by $31 million)
  3. Highest August Governmental/Institutional of $41,214,000 (surpassing 2010’s record by $27.61 million)
  4. Highest August Total of $128,227,500 (surpassing 2014’s record by $59.7 million)
  5. Highest August Apartment units of 214 (surpassing 2013’s record of 206 units)
  6. Highest Single with Accessory Total of 155 (surpassing last year’s total of 118 units)

In 2019, the city issued 980 permits for a total of $327 million in construction value. Of that total, $153.5 million in residential construction, $87.4 million in industrial, $55 million in governmental/institutional and $31 million in commercial construction was issued, said a city media release.

An additional 71,696 square meters of new industrial floor space, 12,148 square meters of institutional and 859 square meters of commercial floor space were created in 2019. There were 549 new residential units consisting of 222 apartment units, 155 accessory dwelling units, 87 townhouses, 75 single-detached, 8 semi-detached and two duplex dwelling units.

Major projects issued in 2019 included:

  • CSPAC Industrial Thornton & Wentworth LP – Industrial building (1121 Thornton Rd. S.) – $46 million
  • Oshawa Coldstream Retirement Development Ltd. – 7-storey retirement home (1224 Coldstream Dr.) – $40 million
  • Ontario Tech University – 5-storey academic student building (40 Founders Dr.) – $38.7 million
  • Trent University – 6-storey student building (75 Thornton Rd. S.) – $25.6 million
  • CSPAC Industrial Thornton & Wentworth LP – industrial building (1147 Thornton Rd. S.) – $25 million
  • Piret (1000 Thornton Rd.) Holdings Inc. – industrial building (980 Thornton Rd. S.) – $11,934,500

Oshawa has kept monthly building records since 1965, while yearly records date back to 1963.

“Oshawa continues to raise the bar,” said Mayor Dan Carter. “The continued investment and diversified development in our city is indicative of just how attractive and competitive Oshawa is. Oshawa is moving forward; it’s the right choice, the smart choice.”

“Oshawa is benefitting from a record year of industrial development with 1.3 million square feet of new industrial space being built or in the development pipeline,” said Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri, Chair, Development Services Committee.
