On expectations of the release of a high-risk offender, Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter said he will advocate for stricter release conditions and strengthening of bail and sentencing laws.
“I will continue to engage with the Solicitor General, Attorney Generals of Ontario, Region of Durham and our local MPs and MPPs to express the concerns being raised by our community and to advocate for ongoing action to improve public safety and the need for stricter conditions of release and strengthened bail and sentencing reforms,” said Carter in a statement yesterday.
Carter’s term of office ends when a new mayor gets elected at October 26 municipal elections.
“I support efforts by both the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada to strengthen bail and sentencing laws, particularly for repeat and violent offenders and those convicted of serious crimes. These reforms are vital to enhancing public safety and ensuring that justice is served fairly and effectively,” said Carter.
Residents Right To Be Concerned
He said residents have every right to be concerned when repeat and violent offenders are released back into our communities, and it is unacceptable that communities are being burdened by repeat and violent offenders. Community safety must remain our highest priority.
“I want to thank the Durham Regional Police Service for proactively informing the public and for its continued efforts to monitor high-risk offenders and help protect our community,” he added.
