Oshawa unveils Phase 4 of King Street Streetscape project

The City of Oshawa yesterday announced the King Street Streetscape Project Phase 4, and invited residents, businesses and community members to share their feedback on Connect Oshawa.

This phase follows the pilot project that began in 2018 when the city sought feedback regarding three design options for the widening of the sidewalk on the north side of King Street East between Ontario Street and Mary Street North. Also on the second phase of King Street East, constructed in 2020 between Simcoe Street North and Ontario Street, and the third phase constructed in 2021 between Prince Street and Simcoe Street.

The fourth phase of the project focuses on the widening of the sidewalk on the north side of King Street West between McMillan Drive and Centre Street. The widening will allow for additional space for pedestrians, landscaping, outdoor patios/cafes, streetscape amenities and businesses, said a city statement.

The community is invited to participate online on Connect Oshawa (www.connectoshawa.ca/streetscape), where participants can review the proposed design, share feedback and ask questions. Feedback will be received until noon on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, and considered in the development of the final design for the King Street Streetscape Project Phase 4.

The Streetscape Design Vision guides the development of public areas downtown and includes specifications for benches, trash receptacles, greenery and more while also investigating opportunities like sidewalk widening.

“It has been exciting to see our vision for a more pedestrian-friendly downtown Oshawa streetscape taking shape,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “As we prepare to enter this next phase of the King Street Streetscape project, I encourage everyone to provide their feedback on the design which will greatly enhance a key gateway into our City’s downtown.”

“In an effort to effect accessible improvements with a reduced level of impact while advancing community projects, the City of Oshawa undertook the opportunity to complete a series of construction projects during the various provincially mandated business/community shut-downs. As a result, we have taken another step closer as a community to completing the King Street Streetscape project which tangibly advances our City’s long range goals of creating a more vibrant urban core with welcoming pedestrian-focused spaces,” said Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri, Chair of the Development Services Committee.

“With the great and exciting anticipation of students soon returning to full time studies downtown and the eventual reopening of business to full capacity, these transformative projects, in time, will offer our community a functional appreciation. Please join us in providing your input as we design and plan relating to Downtown Plan 20Twenty for the phase of work on the North side of King Street between MacMillan Drive and Centre Street,” added.

  1. The mayor Dan Carter and his other subjects authority got the agenda they want to see.
I really can’t see a functioning downtown oshawa when oshawa can’t even pick up residences garbage and recycling.
Ask something as simple as picking up peoples recycling in garbage I can’t see them doing the day today function of the downtown core.
I would really like to hear from my counselor and regional counselor of the downtown area and what they are thinking they must have heard from the residents and the residents and the store and property owners I’d like to hear the public opinion on the matter
