Pedestrians safety month – Be Alert, Be Seen

With the clocks falling back and less available daylight every day, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is launching the ‘Be Alert, Be Seen’ campaign.

To promote the safety of vulnerable road users, DRPS, in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation, and Durham Vision Zero, will be launching the Be Alert, Be Seen Pedestrian Safety campaign starting today (November 1).

Starting t 6 am, Durham Vision Zero partners will hand out LED lights to citizens getting on/off the GO Transit trains at the Ajax GO Station. They will also be handing out pamphlets and educating citizens on how pedestrians, cyclists, electric scooter users and motorists can make it safer for everyone utilizing our roadways.

“With decreased daylight during the day, we encourage you to be alert and be seen by others. Take your eyes off your electronic devices and focus on where you’re walking, riding or driving,” said the DRPS.

The aim of the campaign is to promote and reinforce pedestrian safety, including urging pedestrians to wear reflective clothing, refrain from texting or talking on their cell phone while crossing roadways, and to use caution when crossing the street. It also focuses on cyclists using the required lights and reflectors, and encourages motorists to use their full lighting systems, and to be alert and aware of their surroundings while operating vehicles on our roadways.
