Pickering Neighbourhood Group unveils 10K Project

Pickering’s first outdoor fitness circuit was unveiled in St. Mary Park recently as part of the city’s final Celebrating Sustainable Neighbourhoods program.

The project is a collaboration between the city and participating neighbourhood groups; PickWaste and Learning for Hope. PickWaste was awarded the opportunity to work with the city on a $10,000 community enhancement project after being chosen by its peers as the winner of the program for its efforts in reducing litter and raising community awareness on the topic. PickWaste partnered with competing neighbourhood group, Learning for Hope, to bring this vision to life.

The outdoor fitness circuit includes parallel bars, plyometric boxes, a balance plank, knee lift, joint use-station, push up bars and hurdles.

“The city and its financial contributors are proud to support PickWaste and Learning for Hope in delivering a meaningful and innovative project such as this,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “This initiative will provide residents and students with free fitness opportunities to support their overall mental and physical wellbeing, and for that, we are truly Pickering Proud.”

“This initiative is important to PickWaste because taking care of our environment is just as important as taking care of our health,” said Sam Demma of PickWaste. “Fitness is a fundamental pillar of both of our lives, and this calisthenics gym allows youth to live a healthier lifestyle,” explained Dillon Mendes of PickWaste.
