Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) have issued a warning to poachers in Clarington’s Bowmanville Valley during the current salmon run.
Officers from the DRPS East Division and the MNR are on patrol in the Bowmanville Valleys.
They reminded fishing enthusiasts that there is a no-fishing zone 120m upstream and downstream of the fish ladder.
Netting and snagging fish is illegal.
“Know the rules and have a valid fishing licence for approved areas,” said a police advisory.

Bowmanville Valley is a popular spot for anglers who come even from other regions.
Two North York residents, caught illegally fishing salmon with nets at the Bowmanville Creek in Clarington in 2024, were fined $2,500 each last year.
