Police use tasers to subdue domestic dispute suspect

Durham Police arrested a male and seized a loaded firearm on Saturday, while investigating a domestic dispute in Oshawa.

On April 2, members of Central West Division attended a residence for a female who reported a domestic assault involving her boyfriend. Police attended a residence in the area of King Street West and Stevenson Road South in Oshawa to continue their investigation, said a police statement.

When police arrived, the male became combative with one of the responding officers. In order to subdue the male, officers used their Conductive Energy Weapons (tasers). He was then placed under arrest. During the struggle, a pouch across the male suspect became dislodged. Inside the pouch police located a loaded firearm and extended capacity magazine, the statement said.

Officers did not receive any injuries during the incident.

The 31-year-old man from Oshawa is facing 13 criminal charges, including: Assault; Mischief Under $5000; Unlicensed Person Possess Prohibited/Restricted Weapon; Possess Restricted/Prohibited Firearm No Licence or Registration Certificate; Possess Restricted/Prohibited Firearm Knowingly Not Holding a License; Possess Loaded Restricted/Prohibited Firearm; Possess Contrary to Order; Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number Has Been Tampered with; Tampering with Serial Number of a Firearm; Unauthorized Possession of Prohibited Device; Possession of Schedule I Substance; Obstruct Peace Officer and Take Weapon of Peace Officer in Execution of Duty.

He was held for a bail hearing.
