Several properties may be added to heritage list

Clarington is proposing to add several properties to the Municipal Heritage Register, according to a council notice.

Under the Ontario Heritage Act, Clarington is required to maintain a formal Municipal Heritage Register of properties that have cultural heritage value or interest. The register includes properties that are formally ‘designated’ by a by-law and ‘non-designated’ properties. Properties are included on the municipal register because they exhibit distinct architectural or design value; are associated with an important person, event, or activity; or are a landmark or have historical connections with their surroundings.

The following properties are proposed to be added to the Municipal Heritage Register as non-designated properties: 1 through 12 Veterans Avenue, 36 and 38 Second Street, 49, 51, 53, and 55 Lambs Lane.

The Veterans Avenue and area subdivision is among Clarington’s best examples of the Victory housing neighbourhoods that developed across Canada to provide housing to returning Second World War veterans. The properties also hold cultural heritage value or interest for the connection to the former World War II Camp 30/Boys Training School property. Reclaimed sections of the Camp 30 buildings were brought to this site and assembled on top of pre-finished concrete foundations.

The Victory home typology in the Veterans Avenue neighbourhood is known within the community, contributes to the character of the area, and acts as a physical connection to the World War II era and Bowmanville’s Camp 30.
