Rain plays spoilsport with Clarington Guinness Record attempt

The rain played spoilsport with the attempt for a Guinness world record at the Bowmanville Rotary’s annual Rockin’ Ribs & Brews on June 9 in Clarington.

The host event was Storybook Sunday, and the attempt was to top the the number of people dressed as ‘storybook characters’, which, according to the Guinness Book of Records is 1,560, set by a school in Singapore in 2014.

The rain may have put a bit of a damper as the attempt fell short with 32 people in costumes turning up.

“We fell well short of the number because of the rain, but we sure hope to try again next year,” said Steve Kay, Ribs & Brews Co-Chair.

“But we had a fantastic community event.”

Rain also played a spoiler for the three-day fund raising event that ran from June 7 to 9.

However, Kay said it was a “success” despite the rain. “The community came out to support us regardless of the rain. Though we did not raise as much as last year ($130,000), we are really pleased. There was a lot of hard work by a small group of Rotarians, and we look forward to next year.”

The co-chair said funds raised are used to support community projects and institutionssuch as senior groups and school bursaries etc.

This year’s fund raising total is still under process.

The top three winners for the StoryBook Sunday were: 1st Prize: Cheshire Cat, 2nd Prize: Jack and the Beanstalk, 3rd Prize: The Queen of Hearts
