Guinness world record to be attempted Sunday in Clarington

Bowmanville Rotary Club is aiming to set a new world record for ‘the number of people dressed as ‘storybook characters’, which, it said, according to the Guinness Book of Records is 1,560, set by a school in Singapore in 2014.

The host event is Storybook Sunday on June 9 in Clarington at Bowmanville Rotary’s annual Rockin’ Ribs & Brews.

Ribs & Brews runs at Clarington Fields from Friday, June 7 through the weekend. A free crosstown shuttle will be running.

It’s the biggest summer party in town, according to the organizers, who said this is a landmark year for the club, which was chartered in 1924. “We wanted to do something special for our 100th anniversary year,” said President Chris Zelasko. “100 years of service is a great story for our community, so we thought it would be fun to ask folks to come dressed as their favourite storybook character. It’ll be a great time for everyone of all ages.”

And what qualifies as a storybook character? Simply any character in any book, say organizers — from Mother Goose to the Brothers Grimm, Dr. Suess to Disney, Tolkien, Marvel Comics, Mangas (anime), Star Wars — and on and on.

Along with lots and lots of storybook characters, all the popular features that Ribs & Brews is known for will be back at its site at Clarington Fields – top-notch professional Ribbers with their huge wood-fired BBQs, Bloomin’ Onions, food trucks and vendors with something for everyone, and on the “Brews” side — local beers, coolers, Caesars and more, said the announcement.

It said Ribs & Brews is a family event – featuring a carnival for the kids and showcasing local athletes, with interactive sports displays from local hockey, football, soccer, and baseball teams.

Its two music stages offer some of the best music around, performing a wide range of genres — from bluegrass in the morning to blues in the afternoon and pure rock in the evening.

Ribs & Brews is the main fundraiser of the year for Bowmanville Rotary. Last year it raised over $120,000 to help the club with its “service above self” — locally, regionally and internationally.
