Residents asked to pay parking tickets via scam text

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) and the City of Pickering have both issued a scam alert based on parking violations.

DRPS has been made aware of some fraudulent texts being received by City of Pickering residents, said the police.

“You will not receive a text to pay for a parking infraction, do not click on any links. Be aware and alert from numbers you don’t know, and don’t fall victim to this scam,” it added.

The City of Pickering issued a tweet asking residents if they have received a text like this (below)?

“It’s a scam.

“The city will never communicate about financial information through text message. If you receive a text like this, report it to DRPS at 1.888.579.1520.

If you are unsure if it is the city, call Customer Care at 905.683.7575, said the tweet.
