Residents being threatened with power disconnection

Oshawa Power yesterday raised the alarm over a scam in which residents are being threatened with power disconnection.

“We have been notified of a door-to-door scam impersonating Oshawa Power and threatening disconnection. We are not associated with these individuals and want to remind our customers that Oshawa Power does not disconnect service between November 15th and April 30th,” said a statement from the utility provider.

It pointed out that when disconnections recommence after the winter disconnection moratorium, Oshawa Power will always follow the steps of its disconnection process.

“We will never threaten immediate disconnection, request a meeting for payment, or demand payment in cash, cryptocurrencies, or gift cards,” it emphasized.

Individuals encountering fraudulent activity are encouraged to report their experience to the Durham Regional Police online or via telephone at (905) 579-1520.
