Member for Provincial Pariament (MPP) for Durham said region will not lose any job as a result of the move of Ontario Power Generation (OPG) headquarter from Clarington to Oshawa.

Todd McCarthy’s riding includes both Clarington and North Oshawa.

“I can assure the residents of Durham that no jobs are being lost with this announcement and the $12.8 billion that OPG has invested with the refurbishment of Darlington is on time and on budget,” said McCarthy.

However, Clarington mayor and council have both expressed shock, dismay, and discouragement over the move (see below).

“In 2019, the Provincial Government, alongside OPG, announced plans to build a consolidated headquarters in Clarington, which would bring more than 2,000 jobs to the community,” said a council statement on Monday. “Since that time, this commitment has been a central part of planning for growth and economic development for Clarington — and the loss of revenue and infrastructure to the community will directly impact our community’s plan,” it added.

2,000 Jobs

It is not clear the much-publicized 2,000 jobs associated with OPG headquarter move were staff or included construction jobs for the new building. OPG has opted to buy the General Motors building in Oshawa instead of constructing a new headquarter next to the Darlington Energy Complex in Clarington.

McCarthy reiterated the Darlington refurbishment programme.

“The 10-year refurbishment project currently has over 1,000 skilled trade workers on site,” he said.

“This is exciting news as OPG continues to make long-term investments in Durham Region. With the future construction of the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and the refurbishment of the Darlington Generating Station, OPG is demonstrating a long-term commitment and investment in the vitality and growth within the Municipality of Clarington and the Region of Durham. Our government supports the investments made in Durham and the partnership we have with OPG,” said McCarthy.

He is also Deputy Government Whip.
