Bowmanville Avenue tunnel now closed for several weeks

Clarington Municipality yesterday announced that the Alonna Street pathway and pedestrian tunnel will be closed until further notice.

The tunnel under Bowmanville Avenue was closed on February 8 for repairs after a water main break caused flooding and a sinkhole formed.

Earlier, works were projected to be completed over a few days.

In an update the municipality said the Alonna Street pathway and pedestrian tunnel under Bowmanville Avenue will remain closed for several weeks while crews from the Region of Durham work to ensure the integrity of the area and prevent future sinkholes.

Fences have been erected to keep pedestrians out. For your safety and the safety of others, we urge residents not to move the fencing.
