Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) completed its second weekend of the Summer RIDE program, stopping more than 1,700 vehicles and charging 10 drivers with impaired driving offences.
DRPS officers conducted RIDE checks throughout the Region of Durham with one goal: roadway safety. Although this program focuses on impaired-related offences, the overall goal is to ensure the safety of the roadways within the region, police said.
While the vast majority of motorists are abiding by the rules and regulations, far too many are still driving impaired.
The weekend’s Summer RIDE totals are as follows
1,703 Vehicles stopped by RIDE
49 People given Roadside Breath Tests
4 People received 3, 7 or 30 Day Suspensions for registering a WARN
10 People were charged with Impaired Driving Offences
8 Other Criminal Code Charges
During one of the mobile RIDE lines, officers located and seized a loaded handgun, a reminder of the dangers officers face.
“We would like to thank all residents who called to report impaired drivers. Please remember: If you see it, report it – it could save a life. If you suspect an impaired driver, please call 911 and provide as many details as possible. Vehicle make and model, direction of travel and the licence plate when possible,” said police.
