Rolling 401 block stops car thief, vehicle returned to owner

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said alert officers managed to block a car thief’s quick getaway and returned the stolen vehicle to its owner.

It said a safe end to this crime came because of the great judgement and excellent skills of officers from Central East Division officers.

Early in the morning of September 15, a vehicle was stolen from a residence in Ajax, said a police statement.

Officer dispatched to vehicle theft in progress call near Harwood Avenue South and Lake Driveway in Ajax. Officers checked the area with negative results.

A short time later, officers from Central East Division spotted the stolen vehicle traveling eastbound on the 401. Officers were able to perform a rolling stop forcing the vehicle to come to a safe and complete stop.

A 32 year old male from Ottawa was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possess property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000 and breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing.
