UPDATE: Snow Day at KPR schools and several Durham facilities

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the region from Wednesday evening, February 12, into Thursday morning, forecasting 15 to 25 cm of snow and strong winds that may reduce visibility.

Municipalities, cities and schools in Durham Region have posted updates on what they expect will be open.

What’s closed:

Kawartha Pine Ridge District Schools: All KPR schools, childcare centres, buildings, and worksites, including Education Centres, are closed Thursday, February 13, to students and staff. DDSB and DCDSB had not announced a snow day till late last night.

Region of Durham: The Regional Municipality of Durham is advising residents that–due to inclement weather–the following regionally-operated childcare centres located within schools in Durham Region will be closed today (February 13, 2025):

  • Sunderland
  • Clara Hughes
  • Village Union

Some community-based locations remain open. EarlyON programming will be closed today. Families who attend centres not located in a school building should check with their site for confirmation.

In addition, the main phone line to Durham Region Transit’s Customer Service and On Demand/Specialized Services is currently down.

Pickering: Due to inclement weather, all public City facilities will be closed today (February 13) until 5 pm. This includes community centres, the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex, and all library locations. The city’s fire halls and Operations Centre remain open during this time. Pickering City Hall will also be closed today. However, the City’s Customer Care Centre remains available at 905.683.7575 or customercare@pickering.ca.

The city has posted a Winter Storm Alert notice at https://www.pickering.ca/news/posts/winter-storm-alert/, where community members can stay informed about:

  • Service Disruptions (related to program, service, and facility impacts)
  • Emergency Overnight Warming Centres

  • Power Outages and Restoration Resources (through Elexicon Energy)

Clarington: All of Clarington’s recreation facilities will reopen today, Thursday, February 13, at noon for regularly scheduled and drop-in programs. The Municipal Administrative Centre will remain open today during regular business hours, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Clarington crews have been busy overnight, with snowplow operators focused on clearing the main roads. Avoid parking on the road. Report winter road maintenance emergencies like drifting snow, icy roads or downed trees by calling 905-623-3379 ext. 2661.

Scugog: The Township of Scugog Municipal Office will be closed until 10:30 am, as a result of the recent Snowfall Warning. Scugog Community Recreation Centre will be remaining open during standard hours with drop-in programming available to interested participants.

What isn’t closed:

Oshawa: Due to snow accumulation, the Civic Dome will be closed February 13, until further notice. All other city recreation facilities were to remain open at this time; facility rentals and programs will continue to be offered. Any changes to facilities and programs will be posted on the city’s service disruptions webpage.

Whitby: All recreation programs are running as scheduled. There are no planned cancellations or facility closures.
