The Region of Durham has sent the ‘gondola’ project for presentation to the Oshawa City Council, according to the region’s Director for Transportation and Field Services, David Dunn.
A presentation to the Oshawa City Council is expected in the third quarter, in fall this year, Regional Director David Dunn told Durham Post in an exclusive interview.
The project was discussed at the region’s January 15, 2025, Committee of the Whole meeting. It was referred back to region staff who are tasked with preparing a communications plan and present to Oshawa Council, said Dunn.
The Region of Durham said the proposed gondola project was moved forward following four rounds of public consultations that took place between September 2022 and November 2023. The project cost of the Aerial Cable Car Transit (ACCT) is estimated at just under $1.1 billion.
Other options to ease congestion on the busy Oshawa thoroughfare was the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the capital cost of which is projected at $800 million, as well as a Light Rail Transport (LRT) project, a Monorail, Subway and High-Frequency Bus Services.

Thought that was an April fools joke. I think we have better things to spend a billion on. How about Durham Region start to pave the roads in Oshawa, Roseland Rd, Adelaide, Ritson, Farwell S of 401 etc.
Since there isn’t a traffic problem on Simcoe Street, why would there be a need to fix what isn’t broken? A cockamamie idea for sure.
Any one voting on favour of this idiotic spending needs to be investigated for bribery and kickbacks. This has got to be the dumbest thing this city has ever entertained.
