UPDATE: Scugog declares emergency, roads passable now

Township of Scugog today morning declared a state of emergency due to a significant weather event, snow accumulations over the past few days, wind speeds reaching 110 km/per hour causing snow drifts, icy conditions and road closures.

“Please avoid non-essential travel,” said an advisory.

“Please note recreation activities and the Family Day public skates have been cancelled for the SCRC due to the state of emergency. We will still have Family Day kits available for pick up in the coming days,” it added.

Meanwhile, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) earlier announced the closure of Road Closure King Street between 7A Hwy and Mikelen Drive in Port Perry due to white out conditions,

The weather caused a motor vehicle accident with several vehicles involved. “Please drive safely,” it said. “Winter weather is still affecting road and driving conditions. Use caution.”

The road closure was reopened later in the morning.

UPDATE

The township would like to thank residents for their patience during this winter event. Conditions can change or escalate quickly and for the safety of the public and essential services it was necessary to declare a state of emergency.

Our crews have been working over the last few weeks dealing with conditions that increased in severity from localized flooding, additional snow accumulation, wind speeds up to 110 kmh that caused large drifts of snow, icy roads, white out conditions and zero visibility. A state of emergency allows the township to keep crews on the road during challenging conditions, ability to reach out for assistance to ensure roads are open for essential travel and emergency services. Township also recommended that the public limit non-essential travel.

At the moment, roads are passable and clean up continues. Rain and ice rain is expected today, creating conditions including icy roads and localized flooding. We will continue the state of emergency as a precautionary measure and will review this regularly over the next day.
