Signalized crossroad crashes average 4+ a week in Durham

The Region of Durham has released collision records database that shows 658 collisions over a three-year period (2021, 2022 and 2023) at signalized intersections.

The concerning thing is the cause of these collisions was specifically attributed to a driver disobeying traffic control signals.

“Red light running has the potential to cause serious injury or death for both the offending driver and innocent victims,” said a region statement.

It said Durham Region is one of many municipalities across Ontario using red light cameras to create safer roads.

Red light cameras have been installed at select locations throughout Durham Region to reduce T-bone collisions at intersections on Durham Regional roads.

There are four in Oshawa, four in Whitby and Ajax, two in Pickering and one each in Clarington and Scugog/Uxbridge. For more information and their their locations visit durham.ca/RedLightCameras.

This initiative is in support of Durham Vision Zero, a long-term plan with the ultimate goal of eliminating all roadway deaths and serious injuries.
