Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday announced that Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate into an armed incident at the DRPS West Division headquarter in Pickering.
Since SIU will be taking carriage of this investigation, Durham Police cannot provide an further details into the incident, in which, a man came into the building with what could be a pellet gun.
Earlier, DRPS said at about 4:30 pm on Saturday July 27, a male suspect entered West Division located at 1710 Kingston Road in Pickering, armed with a firearm.
“An interaction took place between the suspect and officers at the front desk, resulting in the male being placed into custody. Two officers sustained minor injuries. The suspect has been transported to a local-area hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time,” said the earlier statement.
It said officers believe at this time the firearm is a pellet gun, however it is required to be sent for testing to confirm.
The investigation remains active, further information will be released once we are able to do so, police said.
On Saturday, DRPS issued an alert advising residents that the building was closed for an ongoing investigation. One male was in police custody.
Officers that work out of DRPS West Division were available to respond to calls for service, said DRPS.
