SIU invoked after three fleeing men crash stolen vehicle

Durham Police yesterday said the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has been invoked after three males were taken into custody for fleeing from police and crashing a stolen vehicle.

On Tuesday, October 17 at about 4:10 am, members of West Division responded to reports of a vehicle theft in progress in the area of Sultana Square and Foxwood Trail in Pickering.

Officers arrived on scene and located the suspects attempting to flee in a vehicle. A collision involving the suspect vehicle occurred, and the driver of the suspect vehicle fled on foot. He was taken into custody a short distance away without incident, said a police statement.

Two other suspects sustained injuries and remained in the vehicle. They were taken into custody without incident. One suspect was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The other suspect was transported to a local area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Due to the injuries incurred, SIU was contacted and has invoked their mandate, the statement said.

Officers involved sustained minor injuries. They were transported to a local area hospital and have since been cleared.

Both the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit and the SIU were on scene yesterday completing their investigations.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the West Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2542.
