Whitby removing waste cans from parks, trails, playgrounds

Town of Whitby yesterday announced that in response to the CUPE 53 strike, the town is removing garbage cans from parks, trails, and playgrounds as it cannot service them at this time.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the town said.

Whitby is currently experiencing a labour disruption. All t own (municipal) facilities and in-person customer service desks are currently closed, except for the Central and Rossland branch locations of the Whitby Public Library. Many programs and services have also been suspended to prioritize essential services delivery and health and safety related matters.

In the event of an urgent situation, residents are urged to call the contact centre at 905-430-4346, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Please expect longer than usual response times to inquiries. Thank you for your patience, said a town notice.

For situations that present an immediate health and safety concern (ex. missing stop sign, downed tree over a town road), call 905-430-4346 anytime, it added.

The town asked residents to stay informed by checking its website regularly and following it on Facebook and Twitter for real-time updates.
