Snow Squall: Today commutes may be significantly impacted

Environment Canada yesterday issued a Snow Squall Warning advising that the Friday morning and afternoon commutes will likely be significantly impacted.

Non-essential travel and outdoor activities should be avoided. Prepare for some disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities. Environment Canada is asking people to prepare for possible road closures.

Northern Durham from Uxbridge to Beaverton is under a an ‘orange warning’ this Friday into Saturday. Total snowfall amount of 30-60 cm is expected.

For southern Durham Region snow squalls are expected with local snowfall amounts of 10 to 30 cm. Poor visibility in areas of heavy snow and blowing snow.

Strong winds are also expected with the possibility of reducing visibility to near zero at times with blowing snow.

Intense snowfall is expected with rates of 5 to 10 cm per hour at times. The heaviest snowfall is expected tonight into Friday night.

Lake effect snow bands will shift throughout the day before locking in place tonight. Where these bands lock in, very heavy accumulations will be possible.

Lake effect snow off of Georgian Bay is expected to intensify and may affect portions of the region from time to time throughout the day.
