Speed partly to blame for left-turn crash death

A 24-year-old Whitby man lost his life after a two-vehicle collision overnight in Whitby, according to Durham Police.

On Monday at 9:38 pm, members from Central West Division were called to the scene of a two-vehicle collision in the intersection of Cochrane Street and Dundas Street in Whitby, said a media release.

The victim was travelling westbound in a blue Subaru when he struck an eastbound Dodge Caravan that was turning left to go northbound on Cochrane Street. When police arrived on scene, emergency personnel were performing C.P.R. on the driver of the Subaru. Despite their best efforts, the 24-year-old male was pronounced dead at hospital. The driver of the Dodge Caravan was taken to local hospital with minor injuries, it said.

The force of the collision dislodged the Subaru’s gas tank which caught fire and was found on a private property southwest of the intersection.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld at the discretion of his family.

Members of the Durham Regional Police Traffic Services Branch, Collision Investigation Unit, attended the collision scene to conduct an investigation. The roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected.

Police believe speed may be a contributing factor in this collision.
